The Glassblower's Garret: Learning by Bleeding

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

At the ford it was as though a storm had broken from the river, not from the sky; water and dirt and arrows flew upward and in every direction, raining down again on the seething armies of paladins and orcs, and the glints and gleams of raised steel or rebounding plate flashed through the throng like lightning. The bloody stink of the gore mashed up with the mud and borne upon the water was inescapable.

The Glassblower's Garret: Writing on the Wall

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

Too many days; then too many weeks. But this was an intemperate season, of course, unfit for an army to strike out afar on the march before the thaw. Each time Nathein heard someone in the streets offering a prayer to the gods that the weather would keep Klaks’on and his hordes from Silverbridge just a little longer, he countered it with a silent prayer of his own for Teorral to speed the general on his way. Such a wait - such an excruciating wait!

The Glassblower's Garret: Return to Routine

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

"You draw a line where I see none, Nathein," Leafdancer insisted stubbornly in his own tongue. "You fight with us; therefore you are a part of our company when you do so, not a tool to be risked or discarded."

"It is nearer the mark to say that you see no line where all others can." He shook his head. "I understand that one's actions might reflect upon those who hire one, but that does not alter the nature of the terms of employment."

The Glassblower's Garret: The Last Reason

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

At first, the lookouts raised the glad old call of hunters returning home, presuming him one of the forerunners, but the sounds died away when first sight of his kit contradicted his silhouette; he had to lift his own voice to let them know he was one of their own. Flocks of watchers collected birdlike in the village tiers overhead as he passed below, all staring in open curiosity at the grim-faced, grey-cloaked soldier entering their village, and it was some time before the first cry of recognition finally rose: “Love of Lasolra, it is Nathein! Nathein Andais!”

“Oh, Nathein!” Tahira’s beam lit her face as she turned to face him. “I did not realise you were here in the hall.”

"I have been speaking with Leafdancer. Is Astran about, as well?"

"Astran got called out on some business," she replied regretfully, and gave him a thoughtful look. "Things are well between you and sister?"

"Well?" Nathein tilted his head.

"Yes, well."

The Glassblower's Garret: Another Man's Poison

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

The breeze was crisp, with a tang of snow. Nathein paused amongst the sprawled dead on the path towards the Pass, looking skyward for the first flakes, and debated the wisdom of pressing on until he had mended the new rent a gnoll had torn in his cloak.

Something flickered on the eastern horizon. The Faanite glanced towards the light, incuriously, and saw a strange, far-off glow just visible over the foothills.

The Glassblower's Garret: Impulse and Instinct

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

“He shall not return, Anelie,” said Nathein, implacable. “Three months have come and gone. You know he is gone. Bring his leavings, if you must, but it is time to return home.”

Anelie flashed him the same yellow glare a wounded she-wolf might give a hunter, pained and savage all at once. “Your niece,” she replied, using the word as her own weapon, “goes nowhere without her father.”

The Glassblower's Garret: Real Dreams

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

She was pacing restlessly in a strange field full of too-vivid flowers, bedecked in red daisy chains, with a frown fixed on the horizon.

“Uncle!” she greeted as she turned to him, her tone a tidal rush of relief. “You’re just in time - I think he’s coming!”

The Glassblower's Garret: Something to Aim At

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

Entered Eocambe, the words on the page said. Seal moved. Portal of demons/drow found in inner keep. Destroyed. Departed.

And that was, indeed, the meat of it; the facts, shorn of unnecessary detail. But the details, albeit unnecessary, were not irrelevant, and they preoccupied him still as he sat on his bunk with the journal open on his lap.

The Glassblower's Garret: The Stuff of Nightmares

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

It was a dream that all who dreamed eventually experienced, old as earth: to be trapped, or lost, or buried somewhere in darkness. Nathein was no stranger to it - his childhood dreaming had often abandoned him to lightless woods - and his waking experiences in adulthood were worse still: buried once in a cave-in underground, and once mortally wounded in the black deeps of the Red Eye Mines. He had not conceived of worse.

This … plane? … was worse.

The Glassblower's Garret: Responsibility

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

Mother stood there like graven statuary - no queen of old could ever have been so stately, nor as grim in her majesty - and regarded both her children with wordless ire, though the only outward sign of it was the tight suppression of her lips. It was clear what was to come, of course, and it made even a whipping from Father seem entirely attractive by comparison.

The Glassblower's Garret: Honour the Dead

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

Nathein felt little beyond contempt for Moevinus - though that was an old story, now ended - and cordially detested the alehouse itself. Only the company of the Legion (most of whom enjoyed the combination of fresh air, ready booze and occasional scuffles with chairs when ‘Moe’ wasn’t looking) had ever drawn him to frequent the place, and after they had gone, he saw no reason to return.

The Glassblower's Garret: Dwarven Pleasantries

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

The wind blew, and blew. Nathein’s attitude towards the cold, like his mood, was not much improved by Thomas’s ward against the elements. Up here - camped between chasms amongst some of the highest peaks of the north - the only ‘shelter’ was the leeward side of a rocky outcrop where the snow could be scraped away and a faltering fire set. The ink in his bottle routinely froze if he let it sit by too long, but he doggedly continued to lean forward and thaw it over the subdued flames of the campfire each time, nevertheless; his account had lapsed for too many days.

The Glassblower's Garret: An Opportunist

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

The wooden ribs of the Destroyer groaned and grated rhythmically with the pitching of the waves - an endless sound below deck, but one that only sprang into focus when other sounds went still. Nathein sat straight-backed and upright in his bunk, watching the others slowly settling down to rest. All the others, in point of fact, save Brand; the minotaur also sat tall on his own bunk - very tall - with burly arms folded athwart his massive chest, glowering slightly into the darkness as if daring the dragon to bodily come and snatch him away to sleep.

The Glassblower's Garret: Pursuing Reality

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

"It is possible that the one who ... starts this ... is doing so to make us more known to one another. Perhaps in an attempt to bind us closer, make the Company more ..." The grugach waved her hand, lip bitten, losing the precise words to explain.

Lyssa frowned, her dark eyes still reddened and tearful after her visions. "What would a dragon hope to gain by that, Dancer?"

The Glassblower's Garret: Escape from Kiheldlund

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

Freedom was neither a warm nor joyful affair. Driving snow whipped around the company as they emerged one by one from the tunnels below into stark daylight, crouching low amongst the stones and scrub in as much deference to the weather as their precarious situation.

The Glassblower's Garret: A Return to Dreams

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

Swallows dipped and wheeled amongst the high places, ducking and diving above the spray to snap insects from the air over a drop of hundreds of feet. The sheer cliffs below plunged with the waters of the falls into the wide, cold waters of the lake beneath, surging from wrath to tranquillity in only moments.

Weather abominable. Entered Kiheldlund territorial waters; seasonal invasion of orcish ships underway. Interrupted. 'Destroyer' damaged. Escorted to port by Kiheldlund navy. Imprisoned.

The Glassblower's Garret: Goals and Drives

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

"Tell me," the half-elf invited, watching his face with that same keen, voraciously curious expression of his, "do you have some goals of your own? If you were to join, they and I would have to help you with that as well."

Another man's legendary advice was a fitting response for that. "I intend not to die, if at all possible."

"Surely you have something more interesting as well?"

The Glassblower's Garret: What Is Mine

Journal Author:
Nathein Andais

The Hornswaggler's wasn't pulling much business tonight; Maricio was just about ready to throw in the towel and return tomorrow when someone finally approached his table. The Kerondite didn't have to look up too far from his seated position to meet the other's level stare - vaguely familiar, but only confirmed when he noticed the faint glimmer of silvery mail under the cloak. "Hey, I recognise you. You were one of the group on that spring run to Port Turquoise, right?
