Glossary

Here's a list of abbreviations, acronyms and specialized terms that you will see often on this website:

PC:
Player Character. Any character that is made and controlled by a player. All PCs on our server can be found here.

NPC:
Non-Player Character. Any character or creature that is NOT controlled by a player. The vast majority of creatures you will interact with on The Known Lands will be NPCs. They can be controlled by Dungeon Masters (see below), but they will often have a static quest or conversation the rest of the time.

DM:
Dungeon Master. A member of the TKL Team who can control the Game World and decide on the consequences of a PC's actions. In the Neverwinter Nights 2 game, DMs are invisible and nearly omnipotent. They can create and possess NPCs and let them speak with the player characters. Events (see below) are often led by a DM. Note that many Team Members are also players, but their PCs will never receive special treatment above those of other players.

Event:
Events on TKL are organized playing sessions, often planned in advance on the Calendar. They typically last around 3 hours and are often (but not always) led by a DM. However, any player can create an event on the calendar. Note that Party Events are restricted to a specific Adventuring Party (see below). If you plan to attend an event, please use the Calendar to sign up for it, so that the DM will know how many people to expect.

FFA:
Free-For-All. An event, led by a DM, that characters from all Adventuring Parties (see below) may attend. Sometimes there will be other restrictions for signing up, like a limited level range.

Adventuring Party (AP):
A group of characters that gathers for an event on a weekly basis. Every party has one specific DM, who typically comes up with a long and convoluted plot line that dictates what happens in the weekly Party Sessions. A complete list of all our parties and the times at which they come together, can be found here. Note that many Party names are often abbreviated as well.

XP:
Experience Points. Your character will require these to level up and become stronger. You can get them by solving quests, killing stuff or for good role-playing by a DM. Note that the first two can only earn you a 1000 XP per week, due to our XP Cap. In a typical DM event, you will also earn around 1000 XP. Experience points awarded by DMs are often referred to as "cookies".

CvC:
Character versus Character combat happens when two PCs fight each other, instead of evil monsters. This type of combat is subject to special rules, which can be read here.

CBT:
Comic Book Time. See here for a better explanation of this concept. Can also stand for Chaosborn Titan, a player.

RL:
Real Life. Anything in your life that is unrelated to NWN2 or TKL. It is generally agreed upon that RL comes first! So if you're in a TKL session and something happens in RL, no one will think any less of you if you have to bail. Sometimes the abbreviation IRL is used to stand for In Real Life.

IRC:
Internet Relay Chat. A chat client that lets you talk with other TKL players. An imbedded version on this site can be found here. There are some people there pretty much at all times, so it's probably the best place to get answers quickly!

TPK:
Total Party Kill. Yeah, that's something you'd definitely want to avoid. The DMs keep a tally on-.. oh wait, I'm not supposed to mention that.
